Weathered does not always mean loose
Fine cracks may be cosmetic while the component remains secure.
Preparation matters
New mortar needs a clean stable joint rather than a thin skin over powdery old material.
Older brickwork can be sensitive
Very hard cement-rich mortar may be unsuitable on softer historic masonry.
